Oppose Elkhorn Ranch on National Register of Historic Places

Created: 12/05/11 (Mon) | Topic:

The State Historic Preservation Office is accepting public comment on a proposal to place the Theodore Roosevelt Elkhorn Ranch on the National Register of Historic Places. NDFB members adopted policy at the 2009 House of Delegates to oppose any such effort.

The Elkhorn Ranch is owned by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Dakota Prairie National Grasslands in Billings County, North Dakota.

Proponents of the designation indicate that the designation is for prestige purposes only and will not alter the multiple-use concept of the land. However, NDFB is concerned that the rules and regulations could easily be changed in the future.

Currently, the ranchers can lease the land through the Medora Grazing Association and the regular grazing allotment program.

Public comment is being accepted until December 15, 2011 and must be mailed by postal service only. They are not accepting email comment.
