In our quest to have the best NoDak summer, while staying within budget, we have been off exploring more of North Dakota. Did you know there’s a fun summer place with a not so fun name? I’m talking Dead Colt Creek in Ransom County, south of Lisbon.

Last year we hauled “She’s A Beaut” out there and camped a couple of days. There are tent sites as well as different amp RV sites, so there’s people across the gamut from camping to glamping. There’s even a pavilion that groups can rent for gatherings.

We like the camping area because even though the camping spots seem right next to each other, there’s a lot of green space behind them for running around or setting up a chat-ring or bonfire. The shower house is conveniently located and the beach is a decent size. The lake itself has little inlets where a kayaker can explore without being in the way of the recreation boats. All in all, there’s a little bit of everything for what we are looking for when camping.

Earlier this summer we found ourselves watching baseball or softball every…single…night. One of the softball games happened to be against a Lisbon team and the game was held at the fields out in Dead Colt Creek Recreation area. This was an end of June, end-of-season game, aka HOT. I knew where we were going (that’s half my struggle with away games) and I understood the assignment, so I packed a surprise mom-bag.

After getting through a game in the heat (we won!), hydrating everyone, and getting into the air-conditioned car, I let the girls in on the mom-bag surprise: swimsuits and towels. We drove over to the Day Use area and after a quick in-car costume change, the girls took off for the beach! After about an hour of swimming, we hopped into the car and headed for home: adequately cooled off and able to check-off one more summer destination off the North Dakota list!

Beaching it on a beautiful North Dakota summer day!
