To my first born

To my first born

by Heather Lang

To my first born…

You were the first one to make me aware that I was capable of loving another human being more than life itself.

You were the first to help me understand that it is ok to be vulnerable.

You were the first to call me "Mom."

You were the first to wrap your little fingers around my heart.

You are why I continue to fight every day.

You are my reason for wanting to better myself.

You have taught me unconditional love.

To my first born…

I am human.

I make plenty of mistakes along the way.

I push you harder and have higher expectations of you, because I believe in you. Because I want you to succeed in anything you choose to do in life.

I want you to push past all your fears to become the man I know you were created to be.

I’m sorry life isn’t fair.

We may not always see eye to eye, but we always have each other’s back.

I’m sorry if you feel my expectations seem unrealistic.

I am learning along the way.

To my first born…

You have taught me so much.

You were the first to look me in the eye and let me know that you and I will always be there for each other.

You gave me confidence and courage.

You have taught me to not be selfish.

You have opened not only my heart, but your dad’s heart, which has me even more in love with him then I day I married him, which I didn't think was possible.

You’ve had the best of me, you made me the best I can be and now it is time to share with the world.

You have siblings that look up to you.

You have siblings that want to be like you. I’m sorry if you feel that is a burden at times, but I know if anyone can handle it, you can.

I’m sorry you’re always expected to be the leader.

The truth is I didn’t know how remarkable you could be, and honestly, I still don’t. But I do know how privileged I am to be called your mom. I can’t thank you enough for all you have taught me and for all the joy you have shared with this world.

Life is rough, life is not fair, I know you know that, but also know that you make this world a far better place just because you are in it. Know that even on my best day I will fail you and on my worst day, I will never give up on you. Promise to continue to accept my mistakes and I will promise to ALWAYS love you through yours.
