Did you know that North Dakota ranks #3 in the nation in sugarbeet production?

Sugarbeets are root crops. That means the part you eat is the actual root. Although a sugarbeet can be a foot long and weigh between 2 and 5 pounds, it starts out as a seed the size of a grain of rice.

When harvesting, a mechanical defoliator removes all the leaves from the beet root. Then a sugarbeet lifter-loader pulls beets from the soil and loads them on trucks.
