Commuting farmer style

Have you ever thought about what the commute to work is like for other folks? Maybe you’ve had a few different jobs and your commute has changed drastically with each job.

For those who work a job “in town” the drive to the office may be either stressful or a relief depending on how you use your drive-time. Many of us in agriculture have a completely different idea of a commute. It could be as simple as a walk out the back door, or as complicated as moving equipment all day to be prepared when the weather cooperates. One thing is fairly certain, for those in production agriculture, “getting to work” may change every day of the week.

I recently had the opportunity to commute home with one of my cousins. It makes me thankful for what I have in rural North Dakota. For many years, my cousin has been involved in agriculture and connected to grain production, but not in the way most farm kids think about. He is a buyer at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
