Elections and beef nutritionist highlight NDFB Annual Meeting
Elections, policy discussion and defending agriculture in a social media world are all part of the North Dakota Farm Bureau 73rd Annual Meeting, scheduled for Nov. 13-15, at the Holiday Inn, Fargo.
The theme for this year’s event is Defending Policy, Making Progress, and NDFB Executive Vice President Jeffrey Missling says it ties in with the annual meeting Saturday night speaker Gary Sides.
“Our theme, Defending Policy, Making Progress speaks to the fact that we in agriculture see ourselves on the defensive a lot, with all of the regulatory policies coming out of Washington, D.C.,” Missling said. “And Gary talks about how people get their information on food and food safety and how they entrust celebrities and activists so often. But there is so much misinformation out there.”
Sides has a doctorate in ruminant physiology and nutrition and more than 20 years of beef nutrition experience. He is currently a beef and feedlot nutritionist for Zoetis.
Missling says the policy development process of the organization will culminate in the delegate session at the annual meeting.
“Each county selects delegates to represent them and that body of delegates will get together to debate issues, and then come to a final product. That product is our policy that our staff and board will work on over the next year. It’s a unique, grassroots policy development process.”
Elections for district directors, as well as president and vice president of the organization will be held during the annual meeting as well.
After four years as NDFB president, Doyle Johannes of Underwood announced he will not seek re-election for another two-year term. Current vice president Chris Brossart of Wolford is running for re-election to his position. District 6 Director Daryl Lies of Douglas has announced his candidacy for president and District 5 Director Chad Weckerly of Hurdsfield has announced his candidacy for vice president.
“We will have those elections on Saturday afternoon and elect both a president and vice president for the organization,” Missling said.
