Calving season is finally done for us. On our ranch, we start in early February and had our last straggler May 1. Do you know what this means? I can finally do my hair again! I understand this sounds a bit silly, but fellow female ranchers know what I’m talking about. It seems every time I tried to get away for a night my plans had to be canceled because of unforeseen issues with the cows.
I received many calls this winter asking when I would be home from work, because we had a problem. Or the days when I did work from home, I would get a call asking me to come out to help with a calf with a broken leg, or a cow who was on her back. Those are all parts of raising food animals, though, and it can be difficult, messy, frustrating and plan-changing, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
