Wasem Receives the NDFB Student Volunteer Scholarship

Topic: Education

Kacee Wasem from Halliday has received the NDFB Student Volunteer Scholarship. This $2,500 scholarship is available to high school seniors who have volunteered for NDFB.

Through Wasem’s volunteer work with Special Assignment Pizza and her county Farm Bureau, she has helped children learn about farm safety and understand where their food comes from.

“Coming from a rural farming and ranching community, I was surprised that most of the students did not understand the connection between the food on the dinner table and the farmers and ranchers that raised or grew what they were eating,” said Wasem.

Through her volunteer work, Wasem was impressed by how much the students retained and their keen attention to detail.

“While volunteering at my county Farm Safety Day, I found that there was also a disconnect between students and production agriculture when it came to safety. Many of the students thought that playing in grain such as wheat or corn was fun because of activities such as a corn pit at a pumpkin patch,” said Wasem. “When we were giving our presentation, you could see an understanding begin to form for the students about how dangerous handling grain is, and that even a grown man could get stuck and seriously injured.”

This fall, Wasem plans to study animal science at Colby Community College in Kansas.

The NDFB Student Volunteer scholarship is one of five scholarships offered by NDFB. A complete list of scholarships can be found at www.ndfb.org/edusafe/scholarships.
